Ebook About Discover the white-hot fantasy romance that broke all the rules, where a fierce woman with powerful hidden magic goes toe-to-toe with the alpha warlord who abducted her...only to steal her heart.KINGDOMS WILL RISE AND FALL FOR HER...Cat Fisa isn't who she pretends to be. She's perfectly content living disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus, avoiding the destiny the Gods—and her dangerous family—have saddled her with. As far as she's concerned, the magic humming within her blood can live and die with her. She won't be a pawn in anyone's game. But then she locks eyes with an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south and her illusion of safety is shattered forever.Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker—the woman who divines truth through lies—and he wants her to be a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm. Kidnapping her off the street is simple enough, but keeping the fierce beauty by his side is infuriatingly tough. Cat fights him at every turn, showing a ferocity of spirit that burns hot...and leaves him desperate for more. But can he ever hope to prove to his once-captive that he wants her there by his side as his equal, his companion...and maybe someday, his Queen?Get ready to burn: This romantic fantasy reads like the fiercest fairytale and includes a protective alpha warlord, enemies who become so much more, high action, humor, heat, and a dangerous world where mythical creatures hide. Readers will want to return to this fantasy world again and again in its sequels A Breath of Fire and Heart on Fire.Book A Promise of Fire (The Kingmaker Chronicles Book 1) Review :
Wow--I am totally stymied. I just started to read this book and I cannot get past page 70ish. I am astonished that this was so acclaimed. It probably is not fair to review a book if you have not read it entirely, but I keep wanting to put it down.As one reviewer pointed out, the book is almost all dialogue and no description. There is no real background or description of the place(s), scenery, location(s), landscape, etc. Many authors--not just fantasy--will put a map in the frontispiece with the locations of all the kingdoms or families' lands. Perhaps a description of the physical environment they live in comes later in the book. I like to have that information. But the biggest problem I have is Cat. She is like a whiny teenager, as though Griffin had kidnapped a teenaged Kim Kardashian. She is beyond immature, and although she keeps hinting at a background of incredible hardships and torture as a youngster, you just don't get a sense of her as a viable heroine. I keep thinking that I must have picked up a YA novel by mistake (although I have read some YA novels that I loved).I don't think I'm going to finish it. I want to like Fantasy, as I am a Regency romance fanatic now, but wish to try a little change of pace by reading another genre. I tried to read it a second time to make sure what I felt wasn't absurd. Especially since I wanted to know if the sequel is worth it. It is a romance after all. There are well recognized tropes used and involved but I cannot stand how the lead characters fall for each other.**mild spoilers**This abduction romance builds upon the implicit idea that a woman's autonomy is something that needs to be changed. The heroine is captured and oh look, this man needs her to do something for him without giving anything in return! He says it will be a partnership but that's after literally dragging her away from her chosen family for what he wants. Actions speak far louder than words as cringe worthy trite as that sounds. To reiterate, i understand that certain tropes are involved in such but everything sours on me trying to read it a second time. And this is while having a vague recollection of how it ends. I don't have any desire to read more books about these characters or by this author.
